When you go to buy a car do you really pay close attention to its insurance group?
If you have settled on the type of car you are after it's fair to assume that the cars in that class are in the same insurance group.
It's not that simple - there are variations.
But what if you want value for money as well as low insurance? Parker's has researched the city car sector and we have come up with three top-value choices that are affordable, have low insurance costs, good kit levels, have half-decent performance and low running costs.
So what are the insurance-friendly city cars?
Here's a trio that might suit you with like-for-like insurance quotes* from

WHY BUY?
The Alto is Suzuki's entry level model designed to cut costs. The car is cheap as chips to buy and (even better still) to run. Group one insurance is a boon, particularly young drivers. Equipment levels are reasonable, however: the standard Alto comes with aircon and airbags and a CD player. However, it is not as fun to drive as the Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107.

WHY BUY? The C1 is Citroen's version of the Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo with different styling on the front and rear. Under the skin it's essentially the same as its counterparts - it's even built in the same factory. The C1 has a good level of equipment and is in group two for insurance, where the 107 (listed below) is in group 3 and the Aygo's in group 2

WHY BUY? As we have said the 107 is the sister car to the Citroen C1 and Toyota Aygo. It has the same three-cylinder 1.0-litre unit that's shared by all three cars. It's a good package offering sharp handling and impressive body control. Because it offers more kit than the C1 it's more expensive to insure - group three.
