Peugeot has confirmed that it is to become the first car manufacturer in the world to build a production car with a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.
The 3008 family car will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine and an electric motor to deliver a total power output of 200bhp.
Peugeot claims it will average 70mpg and emit 99g/km of CO2 emissions. The car will also have a six-speed gearbox and feature second generation start/stop technology.
The French car maker will launch the 3008 hybrid in the UK at the beginning of 2011 and prices will be confirmed close to the official launch.
It has also announced that there will be a 'plug-in' version of the 3008. This will be available in 2012 and will emit 50g/km with an average fuel consumption of 141mpg.
