Renault has unveiled the final designs of its electrically powered Fluence and Kangoo models and customers can now pre-reserve their vehicle in advance of expected launches in 2011 and 2012.
The Fluence Z.E Concept was first shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show and is due to go on sale on 2012. The Kangoo Van Z.E will be released in the first half of 2011.
Both have a range of 100 miles in between charges that take between six and eight hours. At fast charge stations a full charge can be achieved in about 30 minutes (available from 2012).
Owners can also use a replacement battery service where they can swap their flat lithium-ion battery for a fully recharged one at special exchange stations.
The electric version of the Fluence is fractionally longer than the internal combustion-engined version so it can accommodate the battery behind the rear seats. It is the same width as the normal Fluence and inside the layout is very similar. Only the rev-counter has been replaced by a bespoke instrument that displays data concerning remaining range and battery charge.
There's also built-in smart navigation system, Bluetooth telephony and automatic dual-zone climate control, plus automatic headlamp and windscreen-wiper activation.
It is powered by a electric motor with peak power of 70kW coming in at 11,000rpm, while maximum torque is 226Nm. Top speed is a limited to 85mph.
The Kangoo Z.E has the same functions as the traditionally powered vehicle, i.e. the same carrying capacity (ranging from 3 to 3.5m3) and the same payload (650kg)
The battery is located in a central position beneath the floor giving it the same load capacity as the internal combustion-engined version.
It is powered by a 44kW electric motor and revs to 10,500rpm and instantly delivers peak torque, which is a constant 226Nm. Top speed is also around 85mph.
