The best glass squeegees for a clear windscreen

  • Clean glass effectively with glass squeegees
  • Remove dew and excessive moisture to stay safe on the road
  • Great for clearing water during winter months

Written by Aaron Hussain Updated: 18 December 2024

Glass squeegees are useful for clearing away any imperfections on your car’s windows. Of course, your windscreen has a set of wipers but sometimes it can be a little difficult to clear away dirt (or water) from your side windows, and who doesn’t want clear windows when they drive? Especially during the months when the best winter products should be on your shortlist.

A good glass cleaner and microfibre towel is a start, but to really eliminate water without leaving streaks, a squeegee can’t be beaten. And let’s not forget that simply running a squeegee blade across all your car’s windows will save so much more time than the whole process of applying glass cleaner and drying them. A useful tip on a busy winter morning.

A squeegee is a simple silicone blade perfect for effectively pushing water off glass, leaving behind a streak-free finish. A dash of rain repellent will prevent those nasty streaks from building up on your windscreen, but the physicality of a squeegee is all the more satisfying.

During the winter months after you’ve gone into battle with an ice scraper, water is usually left behind. A good squeegee will help make your windscreen go from a de-iced one to a crystal clear one. These are the best examples.

Made with silicone and sporting an ergonomic handle, this squeegee from Autoglym gets our pick for removing liquids from a car’s window. Beyond the excellent water-shifting properties, we like the durability offered by the blade.

Autoglym even claims that this is suitable to be used on a ‘thoroughly cleaned’ car, although we’d still recommend getting busy with a proper drying towel instead to avoid any risk of scratching.

Pros

  • Great build quality
  • Flexible blade designed to glide over many car windows and glass
  • Perfect for both car and home tasks, too

Cons

  • Doesn't include any extras, despite the price point

With a 25cm wide blade and stainless steel construction, this squeegee almost certainly has build quality on its side. You can get a number of different squeegees from OXO, but this one is our personal favourite from the brand.

It's an ideal item for not just car windows, but also household glass and tiles as well. Included in the purchase is a suction cup storage holder which means you can hang up the squeegee on your bathroom wall at home. A very simple, but practical answer to where you're going to put it afterwards.

Pros

  • Suction cup storage mount included
  • Ideal for jobs in both the car and home
  • Good quality stainless steel construction

Cons

  • The larger sizes are possibly overkill for some cars

Larger options will make quick work of a windscreen but need a sizable place for storing it. If you own a smaller car or want something that can quite easily slip into a glovebox when not in use, this squeegee from OXO should be top of your list.

Designed for use in the home and car, this squeegee makes use of OXO’s legendary ‘Good Grips’ handle design meaning it remains comfortable and ergonomic to hold while in use. It’s also affordable and built with quality in mind.

Pros

  • Small size makes it easy to store
  • Great for smaller car windows
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • The job will take longer on larger car windows
Most flexible glass squeegee
Having a flexible silicone blade means you can save time when clearing your windows, and the clever design means you won't accidentally wipe your hand along the window too. Gadlane claims it's even suitable for clearing liquids off all surfaces, but we'd advise you to be cautious when using it on paintwork.

At 310mm long the Gadlane squeegee should be able to tackle even the largest of windows with ease, taking you less time to clear the window and more time on the road.

Pros

  • Flexible design
  • Large enough for even the biggest windows
  • Ideal for curved windows

Cons

  • 310mm length may be difficult to store
Best curved squeegee
Price: $27.85
This curved squeegee is claimed to offer even better water removal than a standard straight-edge option as it pushes the collected water inwards, collecting it a lot more neatly and and clearing the windscreen better.

There are three sizes available and Vikan is renowned for quality and affordability, making this squeegee a smart purchase.

Pros

  • Effective design with the curvature
  • Good quality construction
  • Good value for money

Cons

  • The handle makes storage a tad tricky
Best glass squeegee for cars and home
If you're looking for a squeegee that's a little wider than most, this option (or range of options) from GBPro (Green Bear UK) is worth considering. It measures in at 35cm wide, although other lengths from 15 to 45cm are also available.

It's designed for use on not only car windscreens, but also windows in the home as well - making this a usefully versatile piece of kit. You even get a rubber handle on the end - this can be useful on cold, icy mornings when your gloves need something to keep a grip of.

Pros

  • Very wide coverage with a 35cm blade
  • Suitable for anything from tiles to windscreens
  • Other sizes are available

Cons

  • The larger options could be overkill for some

Spanning out to ten inches and with its own suction hook for easy storage, Mr.Siga's squeegee is ideal for both car and shower windows. The blade is made of silicon and these generally last longer than rubber blades.

You get a range of three different colours and if you don't want to use the suction wall hook, there's a hole on the handle to hang it as well.

Pros

  • Durable build quality
  • Easy to store, thanks to its suction cup mount
  • Suitable for both glass on cars and home as well as tiles

Cons

  • The colour options are quite boring

On the budget end of the spectrum is the silicone drying blade from Silverline Tools. The main drawback is that the lack of a long handle might mean you end up smearing a bit of damp onto your hand, but the grab handle makes it a doddle to use.

You can opt for a one, two, or three-pack depending on your choice, and all boast great value. But don't expect the build quality to be top-notch.

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Can be had in packs
  • Capable for both the car and the home

Cons

  • Build quality isn't the best
This squeegee from Simoniz not only has a grippy handle like the Silverline option above, but it's also wide enough to cover a lot of ground (or glass in this case) with the long, 30cm+ blade.

It also represents great value for money at under £7 for the item, which is considerably less than most options - particularly the squeegee option from Autoglym.

Pros

  • Great value for money
  • Ideal for all car windows and mirrors
  • A good handle for grip

Cons

  • Build quality isn't as great as some others

FAQs

What is a squeegee, and why should I use it on my car windows?

A squeegee is a tool with a flat, smooth rubber blade used to remove water, cleaning solutions, or debris from surfaces. Using a squeegee on car windows ensures a streak-free finish, improves visibility, and removes dirt and grime effectively. It is especially useful after washing your car or during rainy weather to quickly clear water off the windows.

Can a squeegee scratch my car windows or paint?

When used correctly, a squeegee is generally safe for use on car windows. However, if dirt or debris is on the rubber blade or if the blade is damaged, it could potentially scratch the glass. It is important to keep the squeegee blade clean and replace it if it shows signs of wear. Avoid using a squeegee on the car’s painted surfaces to prevent scratches, especially if the surface is dirty.

Can I use a squeegee on tinted car windows?

Yes, you can use a squeegee on tinted car windows. However, ensure the squeegee is clean, and the rubber blade is in good condition to avoid scratching or damaging the tint film.

Is a squeegee effective for cleaning the inside of car windows?

Yes, a squeegee can be used on the inside of car windows. For best results, use a smaller squeegee designed for interior use to navigate tight spaces and angles.

Can a squeegee be used to remove snow and ice from car windows?

While a squeegee can help remove light snow or frost, it is not ideal for removing thick ice. For heavy snow and ice, a dedicated ice scraper or a combination of a brush and ice scraper is more effective. After scraping, a squeegee can be used to clear any remaining water or frost.

How to deal with condensation on car windows

While glass squeegees are a great go-to option when wiping moisture off car windows, we highly recommend also using a car dehumidifier. What these do is absorb the developing moisture that builds up in your vehicle overnight, leaving you with a clear, dry windscreen during the winter times.

Other things to consider with glass squeegees

You really shouldn’t use them on your bodywork unless you like scratched paintwork. Glass squeegees look flexible enough to curve to the contours of a car while effectively scraping away water. But, in reality, that blade will collect any tiny bits of grit and drag them across your paintwork, leaving no water and a scratch. But alongside a snow shovel, perhaps, they are still really useful things to keep in your car over winter.

For getting moisture off the bodywork of your car, we recommend sticking to a dedicated drying towel. When it comes to the inside of your car, we highly recommend keeping a dehumidifier on your dashboard. It keeps the air nice and fresh.

You may also believe that simply using your windscreen wipers will suffice in ridding the morning water. While this is true, glass squeegees will leave a clearer finish, enabling a streak-free finish all the way across your windscreen and every other window, and giving you a lot more vision. That’s particularly vital when the light is low and temperatures drop. But hopefully not so low, that you’ll have to resort to a set of snow chains.
