Garages are inherently dirty environments and rightly so. They’re functioning workspaces, subject to oil spills, brake fluid leaks and whatever muck your tires brought in from the cold. A little axle grease here and there is okay but left to accumulate over time and you could see your beloved automotive sanctuary soon turn into a cesspit of chemically infused decrepitude.

No one wants to work in such conditions, and your end results may pay the price, so start showing your garage some due care today. Not sure what to do first? Mop the floor.

Garage floors will usually bear the brunt of car dirt, so they can become deceptively filthy. Giving your garage a decent mop will remove odours, reduce the risk of slipping on unforeseen oil spills and elevate the general ambience of the room. It doesn’t have to be Ron Dennis eat-your-lunch-from grade, but a little effort will go a long way in improving its condition.

How to clean your garage floor

Start by clearing everything out, including your vehicle, any power tools or fans, your garage organizers – everything. Entirely clear floor space will greatly improve your results as no spot will be left un-mopped. You could treat this as an opportunity to declutter, too – a clear garage is a productive garage.

Once everything has been cleared out, sweep the floor with a rough broom as best you can to remove all of the dust, leaves and any other rubbish. Some materials may require further scraping to remove but priming the floor in this way will ensure the best results as only grease or oil patches will be left to remove.

Once the garage has been cleared and the floor swept, add a bottle of degreaser fluid to a bucket of warm water then proceed to mop down the floor surface until the entire garage has been covered.
