You’d be forgiven for thinking that a glass microfibre towel was just a glorified cleaning cloth. Well, you’d be wrong, and that’s okay. Not everyone geeks out on microfibre towels and waffle weaves as much as we do at Parkers. That’s why we’re a unique bunch that can bring you all the relevant information so you don’t have to search high and low for the best car cleaning equipment.

Alongside wheel and bodywork brushes and sponges, glass microfibre towels are garage essentials, but they aren’t all cut from the same… well, cloth. You may already be familiar with microfibre cloths. However, the ones you clean glass with differ in many ways. Manufacturers bicker and squabble over the best pattern weaves to offer you a streak-free clean, so let’s look at which are the best.

We have also looked at the best glass cleaners for your car, so it’s only fitting that we point you in the right direction with the best cloth to clean your glass.

Designed for use on the interior glass, mirrors and plastics only, this waffle weave will give you a scratch, swirl and lint-free finish. Using these low Grams per Square Meter (GSM) microfibres means that the product you’re putting on the window isn’t being absorbed into the cloth, so you're making the most of it on the window.

Pros

  • Scratch, swirl and lint-free finish
  • No label to reduce scratches

Cons

  • We would like more than one in a pack for the price
Best glass microfibre towel from a big brand name
We know the price is high, but we also understand that this is an excellent cloth for cleaning the glass on your car. The microfibre on this towel from Meguiar's makes cleaning the glass a doddle, leaving all your windows and mirrors streak-free. You can wash it at 40 degrees with other microfibre cloths, but don’t use fabric softener; you’ll damage the weave.

Pros

  • Respected brand
  • Great results

Cons

  • Wash before use
Lint-free microfibre clothes from Glart provide extreme softness to leave a smear-free clean windscreen and windows on your car. These clothes are great because they can be used with or without glass cleaner and work best when slightly damp.

Pros

  • Respected brand
  • Works without glass cleaner
  • One cloth for inside and one for outside

Cons

  • Can leave lint traces
Best big brand, low cost microfibre towel
Price: $6.25
You are doubling up to be able to clean your glass and mirrors and polish up stainless steel products to give them a smear-free, streak-free shine. This so-called 'fish scale' weave Power Cloth from Gtechniq absorbs a bit of water or product.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Respected brand

Cons

  • It may soak up your product; best to use it with water only
A much larger cloth than most at 60 x 80 cm, it’s made for use on the exterior glass of your car. The larger fabric allows it to soak up just a bit of water without becoming sodden. The non-abrasive waffle weave on this microfibre towel from Detailers United means no scratches or lint left over on your windows. Add to that the fact that there’s no label means the chance of scratches is further reduced.

Pros

  • Large cloth
  • Reasonable price

Cons

  • None, so long as you need a large towel
You don’t need to spend big bucks to get a glass cleaning cloth. This option from Kent isn’t technically the best, but it’ll still clean your windows streak-free, and you get three in this pack. They're not as big as some of the other towels, but with the three-pack, you can use a new cloth when required.

Pros

  • Low cost
  • It works best when a little damp

Cons

  • Not as durable as other options

Frequently asked questions

How long will one microfibre cloth last?

As long as you look after them well, washing them at the recommended temperatures and not using fabric softener, it’s easy to get a good working life from a microfibre cloth.

How do I use a glass cleaning cloth?

Keeping it dry or just damp will help you prolong the use while cleaning your glass and mirrors. Once it gets too wet, it’ll no longer work correctly and will not absorb the water or product on your windows.

Do I only need one?

It’s always good practice to use a different cloth for the inside and outside of your windows. This is to avoid cross-contamination or bringing debris outside your window and scratching the inside.

Before you use a glass cleaning cloth, it’s always worthwhile giving your windows a thorough clean with shampoo and water to get rid of any dirt or grit and using a glass squeegee to get rid of excess water.
