All too often we yearn for the ability to drive and operate the LEGO sets we have constructed. It may be a while before we can do that with the LEGO Star Wars sets but there are some Earthly-based vehicles that can now be driven in LEGO form.
How RC LEGO sets work
The sets here are powered by LEGO’s own little electric motors. Some sets have one or two, such as the Transformation Vehicle, some have more. In turn, the motors are controlled by a Smart Hub, which requires AA batteries.
The Smart Hubs connect to your smartphone via Bluetooth and you use an app called CONTROL+, rather than a remote control, to operate the vehicle.
While these sets are good fun, the cars are not rivals to normal remote control vehicles in terms of speed or performance, but they are good fun nevertheless.
The best RC LEGO vehicles in detail
Technic CONTROL+ App-Controlled Transformation Vehicle
Price: RRP £89.99 | VIEW OFFER
With independently powered tracks, the Transformation Vehicle provides a highly manoeuvrable and imaginative driving experience. It can turn 360 degrees and can even drive with either side up, having a racer on one side and an exploration vehicle on the other.
While the acceleration is great, the top speed isn’t high so it’s easy to drive. Likewise, the 772-piece set is easy to construct.
Technic CONTROL+ Off-Road Buggy
Price: RRP £114.99 | VIEW OFFER
The Off-Road Buggy is more about racing over bumpy terrain.
It has a top speed of over three miles per hour and is superb over rough terrain including piles of power cords and thick carpet. The grippy tyres and good ground clearance are to thank for that. However, the buggy does struggle on steep inclines.
At 374 pieces, it’s quite an easy kit to assemble.
Technic CONTROL+ Mercedes-Benz 4X4 Zetros Trials Truck
Price: RRP £264.99 | VIEW OFFER
The Trials Truck has impressive ability when negotiating terrain.
It features proper suspension, lots of power from four electric motors, and in a first for Technic sets, differential locking. These features, along with short overhangs allow the Trials Truck to tackle tough terrain with ease.
Technic CONTROL+ Volvo Articulated Hauler
Price: RRP £229.99 | VIEW OFFER
At 2,193 pieces, the Volvo is a large kit indeed and assembly becomes a reasonable task in itself.
Once built, the Volvo moves and steers and best of all, can lift the tray too. The gearbox is impressive, consisting of four stages – three for the drive, one for the tray. That means that the Volvo can negotiate steep inclines even better than the Off-Road Buggy can.
The tray can lift with a slight payload too, which always makes things more fun, such as refilling the pet food bowl.
