When we venture into the great outdoors, the success or otherwise of our trip can rest on how prepared we are. By not having the proper camping accessory at our disposal, simple tasks can become frustrating and sometimes impossible. One of the most basic bits of kit we should carry is the good old-fashioned camping knife. From preparing food and getting the campfire ready to handle the myriad of other tasks that arise in the great outdoors, top-quality camping knives are a must-have.
Some notable brands that have particularly good form with their camping knives include Opinel, an iconic French manufacturer renowned for its simple yet effective folding knives. Victorinox, the epitome of Swiss precision, offers versatile multi-purpose knives that excel in outdoor settings, including the now legendary Swiss Army Knife. Whitby Knives, a homegrown UK brand, is known for its reliable and budget-friendly offerings. It’s worth checking out the UK laws on what type of knife qualifies as an everyday carry (EDC), which is legal to carry around with you, and those which require a further reason to carry.
Whether you are a seasoned adventurer or a beginner, browse through our selection of camping knives and decide which one suits your needs best.

Some things to consider when buying a knife in the UK
In the UK, it is an offence to carry any sharp or bladed instrument in a public place; the only exception is if it’s a folding pocket knife where the cutting edge of the blade is 3 inches/7.62 cm or less.
In our article, we’ve reviewed some lock knives. A lock knife is not a folding pocket knife, and therefore it is an offence to carry a knife like this, regardless of the length of the blade, if you do not have a good reason. A lock knife is not an offensive weapon by itself, as they were made with a specific purpose in mind and were not intended as a weapon. However, possession of a lock knife in a public place without good reason is an offence.
Carrying a multi-tool incorporating a blade can be an offence even if it has other tools which may be of use in a public place, for example, a screwdriver or a can opener. This does not represent a total ban; it is up to the person in possession to prove they have a good reason for carrying it. For example, someone backpacking in the countryside may reasonably be expected to have a knife for cutting wood or the preparation of meals.
The key points:
• The legal length for a non-locking, folding blade is 3 inches/7.62cm
• A knife with legal length can still be deemed an offensive weapon if it can be perceived as such by someone else
• Locking folding knives, fixed blade knives, and knives longer than 3inches/7.62cm are all illegal to carry in a public place without a further defence
• It is the duty of the person carrying the knife to know and understand the law – ignorance is not a defence
