A ride-on car must be up there with the ultimate gifts to get a small child. They provide hours of fun and joy to a child as they whizz about and let their imagination run wild. Even if they have no interest whatsoever in cars, it’s almost guaranteed they’ll love a kids’ ride-on car.

You can go for a fancy electric kids’ car but be aware that these usually come with a price premium. Just as much fun can be had with a non-electric version, and it’ll be a cheaper, simpler way to let your children enjoy some four-wheel action. We’ve found our top picks for kids’ ride-on cars and listed them below.

What you need to know when looking for a kids’ ride-on car:

What features should I look for?

The most important consideration to make when looking for one of these ride-on cars is the weight and size limits. You don’t want to spend a good wedge of money on something they won’t fit on in six months.

Also, think about storage, the outside ones will be weather-resistant, but that doesn’t mean the seats won’t get soaking wet if you leave it out uncovered. Try and find some dry storage when it’s not being played with, even if that means bunging it in the shed. If you have a ride-on for inside use, you’ll still need to think of where to store it; a bulkier option will take up a lot of space.

Safety advice

Even though these toys don’t have electric motors and are safer to use, make sure that you never let them play with one unsupervised.

The next thing you should look into is safety equipment. If they’re using one of these cars outside, it’s a good idea to invest in a helmet, knee pads and elbow pads to keep your child safe. If they’re using one inside, a helmet is still a good idea and long-sleeved clothing should be sufficient to keep them safe. Remember, carpet burns aren’t nice.
