LEGO barely needs any introduction. The Danish brand has built an empire of bricks that the Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt would be envious of. The world of LEGO is vast, but we are focusing on the car sets here, and that doesn’t mean there are slim pickings.
There are a great many LEGO car sets to choose from that range from the basic Creator 3-in91 and Speed Champions sets, all the way up to the highly detailed Technic sets.

Technic Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 Race Car
Price: RRP £292.49 (was £390) | VIEW OFFER
This is one of the flagship Technic sets. At 3,696 pieces, this is not a quick or easy build, partly due to the fact you’ll be reluctant to take it out of the wonderful packaging. This is certainly a set for enthusiasts and collectors who will appreciate the attention to detail. The 1:8 scale Lamborghini Sian’s V12 is connected to a proper gearbox and has moving pistons. You can also open the doors, turn the wheels, and adjust the rear spoiler. Once you’ve completed the kit, there is a little display plate to sit with the car.

High price but worth it for enthusiasts
Technic Bugatti Chiron
Price: RRP £319.99 | VIEW OFFER
We couldn’t have a list of the best LEGO kits without featuring this one. The Technic Chiron is a 1:8-scale, 3,599-piece kit with some pretty sweet features and includes all 16 cylinders. Each kit has a unique serial number, the W16 engine is put together in minute detail and there’s even a ‘top speed key’ that changes the angle of the rear wing. More importantly, LEGO and Bugatti went one step better – making a life-sized version of the Chiron that was driveable.

Technic Land Rover Defender
Price: RRP £144.99 | VIEW OFFER
This is a must-have kit for any motoring fan or Land Rover Defender fanatic. It’s not an easy build – our sister publication, CAR, did a review of this set and found it a surprising challenge. There are 2,573 pieces in total. The Defender comes with three differentials, high- and low-ratios, independent suspension for each wheel, accessories and plenty of moving parts.

Technic Porsche 911 RSR
Price: RRP £154.99 (Prime) | VIEW OFFER
At 1,580 pieces, the Porsche appears to be considerably less exciting than the kits above. But don’t be fooled. Porsche knows how to deliver and this model is no exception. On the outside, there are black spoked rims, a proper rear diffuser, and aero bodywork at the front.
Open the doors, and inside you’ll find functioning steering, a radar screen, a fire extinguisher system, and even a map of the Laguna Seca circuit on the inside of the driver’s door. There is a proper boxer engine in the back too. The 4.0-litre flat-six has moving pistons that send its power through a visible and functioning differential. A fantastic kit for everyone.
Pros
Opening and closing doors
Moving parts
Cons
Fewer pieces than similarly priced sets
Technic Fast & Furious Dodge Charger
Price: RRP £84.99 | VIEW OFFER
CAR also tackled this 1077-piece kit and enjoyed it because it wasn’t as much of a fiddly challenge as the Land Rover Defender. It’s true to scale as well – 1:13, and you get a load of neat features. The more bespoke details come via a massive, working V8 engine complete with a massive air ram and timing chain, nitrous tanks in the boot and a fire extinguisher in the cockpit. The piece de resistance, though, is a lockable wheelie bar, reminiscent of Toretto’s car tilting back during the drag race with O’Conner in the original film; just without the crash damage at the end of the said drag race.
Pros
Ture to scale
Nice neat features
Working V8 engine
Cons
Can get quite fiddly
Technic Jeep Wrangler
Price: RRP £30.99 | VIEW OFFER
The Rubion Wrangler offers a fun, affordable and alternative design to the supercars and pricey Land Rover. At 665 pieces, it’s still a considerable build and when built, is 24cm long and 12cm tall. The doors and bonnet open and the back seat even folds down. Tremendous colour choice too.
