It’s fair to say that 2020 and 2021 have seen a sea change in the acceptance of electric cars in the UK. With a flood of new models hitting the market, and sales rising faster than predicted, it’s no surprise that for the second time in five years, our Car of The Year is an EV. The Skoda Enyaq iV achieves top honours in the Parkers New Car Awards 2022 and in doing so beats some very impressive challengers to do so.
The Enyaq iV shares much of its technology with Volkswagen Group sister cars, the VW ID.4 and Audi Q4, and achieves something quite remarkable by outshining the pair of them. Not because it’s better value (although it is) or cheaper to run, but because it’s a more appealing all-rounder, with an impressive range of models, a potentially long battery range, and one of the most appealing interiors we’ve come across in a mainstream car for a very long time. We especially love it for that.
Inside, it’s roomy, hard-wearing and plush, and comes with an impressive array of trim and colour choices. The major controls simple, so that making yourself at home in a Skoda Enyaq iV takes seconds – which for many making the transition to electric power is a very positive characteristic. The practicality is impressive, too, with bag of room in the passenger compartment and boot, as well as all of those ‘simply clever’ touches, such as an integrated umbrella, which makes living with one so effortless.
What we have here is the state of the electric car art – one that for most families could take the place of their existing combustion-engined car without making any compromises. It has an impressive battery range, looks understated and is a supremely comfortable place to spend time. In short, it’s an outstanding Parkers Car of The Year – and we think you’ll agree, too.
