SKODA ENYAQ iV
For Skoda’s first serious effort at an electric car, the Enyaq iV is simply brilliant. Although it leans heavily on Volkswagen technology that’s shared with the ID.4 and Audi Q4, the Enyaq iV has a personality all of its own. Starting with the interior, which is enormous, matching the Octavia Estate for lounging room in the front and rear, it’s perfectly sized for families and packed with all the features modern life demands.
The most impressive aspect inside, though, is the quality of its trim and materials, which feel genuinely luxurious and welcoming – and a massive step ahead of all its rivals. On the road, it makes a very convincing case for itself, too, with a comfortable ride, decent performance, and in ‘80’ form, a claimed battery range of 336 miles – call it 275+ in the real world – which is more than enough for most driver’s needs. In short, it’s a brilliant family car that allows most drivers to go electric without making compromises.
RUNNERS-UP
TESLA MODEL 3
The Tesla Model 3 was our Car of The Year in the 2020 Parkers New Car Awards and has been updated for 2022 with some tweaks to make it even easier to live with, and a noticeable uplift in quality. This excellent EV remains a big-selling car in the UK, despite only being available in unfashionable fastback saloon guise in a world rapidly turning to SUVs.
Despite that, it really delivers where it counts, with a long battery range, comfortable driving experience, excellent performance and handling and the best charging network in the business. Top it off with advanced driver assistance technology and a light, roomy and airy interior, and you’re left with a highly-appealing car that deserves all of the popularity it has won since its launch.
HYUNDAI IONIQ 5
If you’re looking to make a statement with your next electric car, then the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is likely to be right at the top of your shopping list. With concept car looks and a spacious and clever interior with some amazing features, it literally oozes desirability.
Strip away the jaw dropping looks and you’re left with a quite brilliant electric car that comes in a variety of flavours to cater for those who want sports car-baiting acceleration, a long range, or affordable entry-level price. Don’t be fooled by its family hatchback shape, though, this is a big car that can almost match the Skoda Enyaq iV for interior room and practicality!
