Following two electric car winners in the past three years, the award for Parkers Car of The Year 2023 goes to the petrol-hybrid Honda Civic e:HEV. Taking the top honours in the Parkers New Car Awards 2023 is a remarkable achievement, particularly for a fuel-sipping family hatchback in an increasingly electrified world.
It’s a reflection of just how effective the Japanese firm’s excellent hybrid drivetrain is in the real world, proving you don’t need to plug in to get great efficiency and low running costs.
The new Civic is an all-new car from the ground up, and shoots straight to the top of the family car class. It’s only offered as a hybrid, and after years of small engines for economy it’s a relatively-large 2.0-litre, giving it the best of all worlds. The new Civic is powerful, with 181bhp, good to drive and almost ludicrously efficient into the bargain, with 60mpg on the cards without trying too hard. It’s also quick off the blocks with a 0-60mph time of 7.8 seconds.
Although the Civic isn’t particularly cheap to buy, it is good value. The base model Civic has lots of equipment, while the mid-level Sport and range-topping Advance models really pile on the kit, while offering cutting-edge safety systems. For the huge number of buyers unable or unwilling to plug-in at home, or use increasingly stretched and costly public EV chargers, this is state of the art for a family car to suit everyone.
In short, the Honda Civic is an outstanding Parkers Car of The Year – and we think you’ll agree, too.
