Ford Transit Custom
The Ford Transit Custom retains its stranglehold on the Best Medium Van award, but this is not a simple repeat of last year’s win. This year’s Custom is all new but does so much more than continue where its predecessor left off.
Let’s face it, it would be a shock if the successor to a multi-award-winning van wasn’t good, but the Transit Custom’s innovations are genuinely clever and different to everything else that is out there.
It might be slightly smaller in the rear, but it’s easier to get into the loading bay thanks to a new step and removed retaining arms on the rear doors. It’s packed with tech, too, with so many driver assistance systems and such an excellent base-offering of interior equipment that nothing else matches it. In short, the best got better.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Toyota Proace
The Toyota Proace is fundamentally the same as four other mainstream mid-size vans – the Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Scudo, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro – with one major and defining difference. That is its 10-year warranty, and the peace of mind that brings nudges it firmly ahead of the other four when we were considering which is the best medium van.
The Proace offers a wide range of different versions, with two lengths and a combi sitting alongside a selection of conversions that Toyota will sort out for you courtesy of some third-party providers. There’s even a campervan, which there isn’t on the others.

Volkswagen Transporter
We agonised over this one, as the VW Transporter is not long for this world. The T6.1 is set to be replaced by the version that was co-developed with Ford and you are not able to go to VW and specify your dream Transporter.
However, as things stand, we are yet to even see the new model and you can still choose from a wide range of stock VWs, so we have no qualms with recommending the Transporter as one of the best medium vans available. Given the Ford Transit Custom’s success in this year’s awards, the future is bright, too.
