Volkswagen Multivan
The Multivan effortlessly combines the best bits of, well, a van, with the engine range, technology and driving manners we’ve come to expect from Volkswagen’s range of passenger cars. Of course, the highlight is that flexible interior – with square sides, big sliding doors and up to seven seats, it’s a clear winner in the Best Seven-Seater Car awards category.
The interior’s very flexible too, as the seats are able to slide, recline and be repositioned as you like. Once comfortably ensconced, though, the Multivan’s car-related underpinnings make themselves known with far greater comfort, refinement and equipment levels than any van-based rival.
You can even specify your Multivan with an efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving it a one-up over its diesel-powered competition. We’ve done many thousands of miles in Multivans of various description and we’ve always come away impressed – we don’t think there’s any better way to move seven people around.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Dacia Jogger
What do you do if you want the best seven-seater car but have a supermini-sized budget? Enter the Dacia Jogger, which has space for seven adults but costs less than £20,000 in its base guise. Like all Dacias, you do sacrifice some creature comforts – in this case, there’s very little driver assistance tech, but that might actually appeal to some drivers.
What’s bound to appeal is the flexible interior, which can be turned into a five-seater with a massive boot quickly by lifting out the two lightweight rear seats. It’s available with a 1.0-litre petrol or a surprisingly frugal 1.6-litre hybrid, with a raised ride height and body cladding giving it a surprisingly rugged edge too.

Land Rover Defender 130
Technically the Defender 130 doesn’t belong on this list as this vast SUV can actually seat eight passengers instead of just seven. It does so in surprising comfort, too. Sure, getting to the third row requires a bit of athleticism, but once you’re back there you’ll find legroom and headroom in abundance plus a great view out of the big side windows.
And this is a true go-anywhere family car – it’s almost unbeatable off-road, seriously comfortable on-road and beautifully refined on a long journey. Just make sure you have deep enough pockets to feed its thirst and a long enough driveway to accommodate its vast bulk.
