Best Value Car | Parkers New Car Awards 2024

Best Value Car Award in partnership with Closer…

You're looking for a great car with the latest tech and kit, but aren't prepared to pay a premium. These three cars tick those boxes with style. However, our Best Value Car award winner, the MG4 EV, offers all of this in spades, plus it will be cheap to run if you charge it up at home overnight.

Best Value Car - MG4 EV

Yes, we’re aware that Best Value Car is the second award we’ve given the MG4 EV this year – but it’s for a good reason. It’s brilliant and it’s cheap. Prices start from £26,995, making it one of the most cost-effective ways of getting behind the wheel of a brand-new electric car. Plus, unlike the cheaper versions of the Vauxhall Corsa Electric and Fiat 500e, you don’t sacrifice range for price and it’s usefully bigger inside.

Even the most basic MG4 EV has a maximum official range of 218 miles. That’s slightly less than the (rather ambitious) 222 miles Vauxhall quotes for the Corsa Electric, but the cheapest Corsa Electric is around £5,500 more expensive than the cheapest MG 4 – so it simply isn’t worth the extra cash.

If you have serious range anxiety, you can always step up to the MG4 Long Range. It has a larger 61.7kWh battery pack and a longer maximum range of 281 miles. Do you want to know the best part, though? It still beats the cheapest Corsa Electric on price by almost £3,000. Sure, its cabin is trimmed in cheap materials and its boot is quite small compared to similarly sized rivals. But what do you expect for the money?

BYD Dolphin

BYD Dolphin driving profile

The Dolphin is another great-value electric car from China. When BYD gets finally gets its ducks in a row and hits the UK market properly in 2024, the cheapest Dolphin will have a starting price of just £25,000, meaning it’ll undercut the MG4 EV by a couple of grand, running it close for the Best Value Car award.

To access that low starting price, you’ll need to make a few sacrifices, including a smaller battery pack and a less sophisticated rear suspension system. But if all you need is a spacious, eco-friendly car to potter around town in, it could be perfect for you. We reckon the more expensive models (priced from around £30,000) make slightly better sense as they have longer range, more powerful motors and interiors trimmed in a range of upmarket materials.

Dacia Jogger

Dacia Jogger (2023) review: side view driving, fly-by, country lane, orange paint

We love the Jogger. It’s part family MPV, part adventure vehicle – and we couldn’t help but fall head over heels for its rugged charm. Especially because it’s so affordable. Prices start from just £18,295 for the 110hp 1.0-litre three-cylinder model, which is exceptional given the amount of space on offer.

Now, we covet the 1.0-litre Jogger. We reckon it’s the one you should go for because it helps to keep the price down. However, if you’re worried about fuel consumption Dacia also sells a self-charging hybrid version of the Jogger, which is priced from just £22,995. Not only does it drive the car’s fuel economy into the low 50mpg range (which is great for a seven-seater), it also gives you a healthy boost in power to 140hp. If you need to carry lots of people cheaply, buy one.
