WINNER
Volkswagen ID.7
One of the most fiercely contested categories in this year’s awards was for the ‘best large family car’. After much deliberation it was settled that the new Volkswagen ID.7 would take class honours. Easily the best electric Volkswagen yet, the ID.7 is its flagship EV, and lives up to that with its premium interior.
It might not be the most obvious large family car these days, but that’s why it deserves special mention. The spacious hatchback bodystyle – and newly introduced Tourer estate car – are well-suited to family duties, with a huge boot and generous rear-seat space ticking all the right boxes. A very comfortable suspension setup and refined road manners make it an ideal cross-country companion.
And if you think long jaunts aren’t well-suited to an electric car, that’s where the Volkswagen ID.7 will prove otherwise, with its 436-mile range making it one of the longest of any electric car on sale today.

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Skoda Kodiaq
Few manufacturers make cars as well suited to families as Skoda, and the firm’s new Kodiaq SUV is a very close second in this category. Even more spacious than its predecessor, its vast interior dimensions equate to a seriously practical car with a massive boot. The option of a third row of seats is also key to the Kodiaq’s appeal, although passenger space in the rearmost chairs is tight for adults.
The Kodiaq looks the part inside and out, and as long as you stick with a version with smaller alloys, is very comfortable and quiet on the move. You can also get this new model with a plug-in hybrid setup for the first time, bringing an impressive 75-mile electric range, and has shone in our efficiency tests. It’s just a shame the plug-in hybrid isn’t available with seven seats.

Skoda Superb
It’s been a busy and highly successful year for Skoda and the new version of its flagship Superb is a worthy runner-up. Sharing much of the technology, engines and underpinnings with the Kodiaq, the Superb is a hugely practical large family car that is only slightly behind its SUV sibling because it’s two down on seats.
We’ve already driven the new Superb across Europe and couldn’t knock its comfort or refinement over more than a thousand miles. While we closely considered the mechanically-similar Volkswagen Passat as a runner-up, it was ultimately the fact you can still choose the Superb as an estate car and large hatchback that earned its place on this list, whereas the Passat is now only sold as a wagon.
