Ford Transit Custom
The Ford Transit Custom has a grip on the Best Medium Van award as tight as its grip on the top spot in the sales charts. Indeed, it’s usually the bestselling vehicle of any sort in the UK. After a year on sale, this second-generation version of the Transit Custom is well ensconced as the best contender in the class by some margin – but we expected nothing less of it.
The standard panel van body lost some space but gained a more user-friendly loading step and better access through the back doors. It comes with largely the same tech as Ford’s cars, which works really well, it’s great to drive and the cabin has loads of storage. The optional steering wheel that converts into a table is a minor work of genius.
A huge and diverse model range means there’s a Transit Custom to suit most use cases. That includes the option of plug-in hybrid and fully electric power; the latter has a range of up to 209 miles, plenty for town deliveries.

Toyota Proace
An erstwhile runner up for this award, the Toyota Proace is a great van in many ways but isn’t quite good enough to topple the winner. It’s the fifth spin-off from the Stellantis medium van platform, alongside the Citroen Dispatch, Fiat Scudo, Peugeot Expert and Vauxhall Vivaro. They’re all fundamentally the same vehicle, just with different front-end styling and model ranges.
The Proace offers a varied choice of bodies, engines and trim levels, plus there’s an electric version. It’s a useful size, offers a good payload, is pleasant to drive and the cabin is comfortable. But what sets it apart is Toyota’s industry-leading 10-year warranty. Have it maintained by a Toyota service centre and an extra year of coverage is added, beyond the standard three, up to the 10-year maximum.

Maxus eDeliver 7
The Maxus eDeliver 7 is the Chinese brand’s latest entry to the UK market and it’s a strong contender if you’re looking for an electric medium van. It combines a usefully long 230-mile range with a payload of over 1,100kg, figures few rivals get close to. It’s not without faults. The load bay floor is very high up (the batteries could have been more cleverly packaged) and there’s a distinct lack of storage in the cab.
But it’s decent to drive, the tech functions well and it’s very good value. There are several body configurations to choose from, as well. The Maxus dealer network is growing all the time, so it’s becoming increasing easy to buy a Maxus and have it serviced.
