WINNER
Ford Ranger
In 2024, the all-new Ford Ranger jumped straight to the top of the class, and nothing’s come along in the last 12 months to topple it. It’s no surprise if we’re honest: the previous generation Ranger was a multiple award winner, and the latest model builds on those successes.
It doesn’t matter if it’s an entry-level model or the hilarious Raptor, the Ranger is good to drive, comfortable and has a strong range of engines to suit all needs. That includes fuel-sipping diesels and the potent petrol V6 found in the Raptor. Space and interior quality has improved, with high-spec versions feeling impressively plush inside and packed full of equipment.
We also appreciate the small touches that make life generally easier. A big, clear infotainment system is a boon, and it retains physical controls for the heating, too. Shorter folk especially will love the step built into the rear bumper. It makes it much easier to either grab something out of the bed or climb up there. Whether you’re using it as a workhorse or family transport, the Ranger really is the best pickup of them all.
How much would this pickup cost to insure?

HIGHLY COMMENDED
Volkswagen Amarok
If you’re more of a VW lover than a Ford fan, the Amarok is a very close second to the Ranger. It shouldn’t really come as a surprise considering the pair were developed in tandem, but there are a few differences in the details that make us sway towards the Ford. We’ve already covered the Ranger’s genius rear step, but there’s more to it than that.
While all regular Rangers can carry over 1,000kg in their bed, top-spec Amarok Aventuras dip below the tax-critical 1,000kg mark. Yes, the same is true of the Ranger Raptor, but the improved off-road ability and comfort provided by its bespoke rear suspension system makes up for that. The Aventura is just a normal Amarok with a few too many trinkets and oversized wheels. Even so, those that do select the Amarok will still have themselves a fantastic pickup, and one that isn’t too hard to justify over the Ranger.

Toyota Hilux
Rounding out the podium is the Toyota Hilux once again. It can’t match the Ranger and Amarok for ride and handling, and its four-cylinder diesel engines are outgunned by the V6s available in the Ford and VW. The Hilux’s 2.4-litre is OK in most scenarios, but we’d recommend the 2.8 if you can stretch to it.
However, the Hilux is a no-brainer if you value long-term dependability. While Ford and VW’s warranties are a measly three-years, you get up to 10 from Toyota if you get it serviced at a main dealer every year. Given Toyota’s stellar reliability record, it should put to bed a lot of worries especially if you’re using your truck hard. Just be prepared for an interior that feels rather old hat compared to the newer Ford and VW’s.
