Peugeot has revealed its stunning new e-5008 – the firm’s largest SUV that looks set to challenge the Land Rover Discovery Sport as the must-have seven-seater for families. It brings electric and hybrid engines to the 5008 for the first time, with up to 410-miles of claimed range for the EV.
Built around a new platform that’s shared with the smaller new Peugeot 3008, the front-end sections of the two cars are very similar, but it’s behind the front seats where all changes.
Both cars share a distinctive design, incorporating a large frameless grille integrated within the bumper, as well as the firm’s new three-claw lighting signature. Around the back, the Peugeot e-5008 has more of a boxier shape to free up more space, compared with the coupe-like look of the 3008, while a bold range of alloy wheels up to 20 inches are available.
Inside, the new 5008 mirrors the look of the smaller 3008, with what Peugeot calls a 21-inch ‘Panoramic i-Cockpit’, which is a large digital dial display merged with a touchscreen on one curved piece of glass. Peugeot’s trademark small steering wheel is present, along with a range of configurable shortcut buttons on a touch-panel in the dashboard.
At 4.79m in length, it’s around 15cm longer than the outgoing 5008. It arrives to rival the Mercedes-Benz EQB in the electric seven-seater class, and the Nissan X-Trail in the hybrid market.
Peugeot promises easy access to the rearmost seats as the middle row can easily be tilted and slid forwards, though these are expected to remain best-suited to children rather than adults. The 259-litre boot with seven seats in position is larger than the outgoing car, but with only five seats in place, the 748-litre area is smaller than the currency model.
Three electric and two hybrid versions will be available. Starting with the EVs, there is a choice of 73kWh or gargantuan (for the class) 98kWh batteries, allowing for claimed ranges of up to 311 and 410 miles respectively.
With the 73kWh battery, there’s a choice of a single 210bhp motor model or a dual-motor all-wheel-drive version boasting 320hp and a 73kWh battery. No performance figures have been given. The 98kWh battery comes with the ‘Long Range Single Motor’ model, which has a 230hp power output. Each have a maximum DC charging speed of 160kW, which Peugeot says allows a 20 to 80 per cent recharge to completed in 30 minutes.
The 5008 will also be available as a 136hp mild-hybrid, using a turbocharged 1.2-litre petrol engine paired to a six-speed automatic gearbox that incorporates a small electric motor. A new 195hp plug-in hybrid model will also join the line-up, which Peugeot claims offers 49 miles of electric range.
The 5008 will be sold in two trim levels – Allure and GT. Standard equipment includes the Panoramic i-Cockpit, keyless entry and a reversing camera, with the GT trim adding a black roof, Alcantara upholstery, heated front seats and adaptive cruise control.
Orders for the Peugeot 5008 will open in the autumn, with pricing yet to be announced. Electric models, as long as they’re serviced at Peugeot dealers at least every 24 months, will also covered by a warranty lasting up to eight years and 100,000 miles.
What this means for you
Peugeot already has one of the widest line-ups of electric cars of any mainstream manufacturer, and the arrival of the e-5008 is a welcome addition. It means that nearly every new Peugeot is available as an EV, including everything from the small e-208 up to this new e-5008.
It will also be a welcome addition to the electric seven-seat family SUV market, which so far has fairly slim pickings. The Mercedes EQB is currently the UK’s most affordable electric seven-seat SUV, but still costs from £52,800. It’s expected that the Peugeot e-5008 will undercut this, and hopefully come in under £50,000.
Yet, if you’re not wanting to go down the electric route, it’s useful that Peugeot is continuing to offer the 5008 with more conventional petrol and hybrid engines.
