Overview

The Audi Q5 is one of the brand’s most successful models. It’s not really a surprise as to why – it’s always been the right size for a lot of people, has offered a lot of flexible engine options and has had a badge on the front that’s attractive. That makes it the best SUV for countless families, and as such, Audi needs to make sure it doesn’t rock the boat with this new one.

It’s good to know, then, that it doesn’t look like Audi has. The new Q5 follows the same formula as previous versions has, and uses a lot of similar technology that’s carried across several current Audi models – namely the A5, A6 and Q6 – including a similar design and an interior that’s almost completely carried over.

You can choose from a single TFSI petrol engine or TDI diesel option – a helpfully simple engine decision that’ll make buying one a little easier, or choose the SQ5 for some serious performance. Sport, S Line and Edition 1 are your trim options, with even base model Q5s coming with a lot of standard equipment.

The Q5 is in a very busy part of the car market, meaning it has plenty of competition – namely from other premium manufacturers. If you’re looking at a Q5, you may well be looking at a BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC – or even a Volvo XC60.

So, how does this new model fit in? Read on for our full review of the new Audi Q5, what we like and don’t, and to find out what processes we go through to get to these conclusions, read our how we test cars page.
