Citroën AX 1.4 D Echo 5d (1992/K) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Better diesels for the money. Cheap, though.
Costs
Up to 85,000 miles it didn't cost me much, then suddenly cost me loads; electrics, head gasket.

On the road
Driving
Has been nippy. Great MPG - up to 70mpg, even with roof box. In town, 55mpg or so. MOTs cheap, just started to cost more.
Performance
For a small diesel it does ok. Bit noisy but has a pleasing rasp. Just don't take any chances.

Living with it
Reliability
Until now, 95%. Had to replace heater plugs, change oil and service every 6-7000 miles, but watch coolant, system is wierd - can pressurise and blow gaskets, which costs ££s. 1.4 engine is quite wimpy.
Image
Slightly above a Lada, but with a certain French 'je ne sais quoi'.
Comfort
Very adaptable. Take out seats and you've got a van. Carries a family of 4 easily, though 5-door best. Don't drive if over 6ft!

Security and Service
Security
Ha Ha. Most days I don't even lock mine. Plastic hatchback means easy access.
Service
Never used Citroen dealer, except for touch up paint (didn't match).

Engine
Rock solid until 85,000; head gasket blown, wierd cooling system and prone to air bubbles.
Other
Flimsy car - not one to have a crash in. Versatile; can be a van, great for trips to the tip.
