Citroën AX 1.4 DTR 5d (1990/H) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Little value to lose.
Costs
Parts from non-Citroen dealers, e.g. German Swedish are cheap. Runs on air, 50 - 75mpg.
-
On the road
Driving
Well balanced on the limit, very predictable, surprisingly so in the wet. Excellent straight line stability for size.
Performance
Reasonable turn of speed when unladen, acceleration appaling when laden, but will still hit 90mph plus.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Given age and mileage, reasonable.
Image
French peasant's car, but without the class stigma of a Nova!
Comfort
Amazingly compliant ride - French style. Little wind noise, but excessive road roar. Seats lack support.
-
Security and Service
Security
Locks are flimsy and offer little protection.
Service
Dealer's parts service useless. Dealers hold few spares and ordering takes 3 days plus. Wouldn't have this problem with a Ford!

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Head gasket blew at only 120k miles - non metal type had literally rotted. Only starting failure due to wiring to diesel pump stop solenoid. Engine wearing well for having covered 145k - drinks a pint of oil every 1k.
Other
Serious flaw with quality of electrics, especially earthing points. Caused engine to overheat in alps this summer when cooling fan wasn't earthing.
