Should you buy one?

We’re not going to sugarcoat it. The Citroen C4 Cactus isn’t a perfect used car. It has some electrical gremlins, it has a couple of build quality problems and unscrupulous owners have pushed the most unloved examples to their breaking points.

But, if you manage to find a well-maintained example at the right price, you’ll have a very cheap, very efficient, very comfortable and very interesting second hand SUV. Just don’t be afraid to walk away from a car that has too many problems to be economical to repair.

What we like

This is a fantastically comfortable and very relaxing car to drive. It’s also surprisingly cheap. You can have one for less than £4,000, which is staggering value for a family SUV. It also has a good safety score and a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines.

What we don’t like

If you get a bad C4 Cactus, you could spend thousands on putting all its various faults right. We also don’t like how much its interior relies on its (rather unreliable) infotainment system to control its functions and the diesel model is rather unrefined.
