Citroën e-C4 X verdict
Is it any good?
The Citroen e-C4 X is a perfectly good car, but it is a much more niche proposition than the hatchback version that sits alongside it in the range. Although it offers passenger space, we can’t see the point of this in favour of the far more useful hatchback version.
The rear passenger room is good though, but it’s not as if this is a weak spot of the C4 hatchback, so again it isn’t really a slam-dunk reason to pick this version. This isn’t to say this is a bad car, just that for many the e-C4 will be a better bet thanks to its more accessible boot space.
Thankfully, there isn’t a big style sacrifice to be made if you want to go for the four door, nor will it cost you more or come with a notably different equipment list or driving experience. It’s a straight choice between the two, but we’d go for the five-door version every time.
What we like
The ride comfort is excellent, as is the interior room. If you’re after an undemanding family car and don’t need the practicality of a hatchback, it’s an interesting option. Also worth noting are the e-C4 X’s excellent LED headlights and driver-assistance tech.
What we don’t like
The handling is sloppy, and it could give passengers car sickness on rough roads. The lack of a hatchback is puzzling, and limits the car’s usability for families – why it didn’t receive an opening fastback-type tailgate, like the Peugeot 508 it beyond us.
