Citroën Xsara Hatchback 1.9 D X 5d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
I had a choice between this, an Ibiza, an Escort, or a 106. It was much more car for my money.
Costs
Cheap to buy but devalued quickly, cheap on fuel and insurance, but parts are expensive. (Tip: Citroen dealers are often the cheapest place for parts).

On the road
Driving
Feels very big compared to the Saxo, but for a base model it handles very well, lack of power!
Performance
Fuel economy and power are not to hot compered to ZX due to extra safety equipment.

Living with it
Reliability
In two years I have had one break down, (steering pump £180 for parts), heater plugs will now need changing.
Image
I keep getting comments about "where are the wife and two kids".
Comfort
Very comfortable, could drive 500 miles in a day no problem, it the most comfortable car in its class I have come across.

Security and Service
Security
With on-board immobiliser, deadlocking boot and forward door lock, it's very secure. Besides, it has a 1.9D sticker.
Service
Depends in the dealer. Norwich is good, Stroud ok and Gloucester is poor...

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Good old XUD, had power steering pump fail at 50k miles. The steering worked it just got very noisy.
Other
I think most problems I have had relate to it having been stored at some point. Probably would have been better off with a higher mileage one.
Ownership
