Daihatsu Fourtrak 2.8 TD EL 3d (89) (1989/F) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
Cheap alternative to a Landy and just as competent.
Costs
Servicing can be awkward (finding parts can be fun), 30-35mpg - not too bad at all for a car that weighs almost 2 tons!
-
On the road
Driving
Very good driving position, nice and high with plenty of visibility.
Performance
Not the fastest 4x4 ever built, noisy at speeds, bouncy rear-end on tarmacced roads. Comes into it's element of road, very sure footed, good wading depth and pulls like a tank uphill.

Living with it
Reliability
Valve seals went at 98,000 - other than that superb - never fails to start. Engine has never Hydroscoped and we go off road in some very severe water at times.
Image
Getting dated now but people who know their 4x4's know these are more than capable machines.
Comfort
LWB better, more comfy than Landy to drive, SWB tends to be cramped in the back with little luggage room. Interior wears very well for car of it's age. Heaters aren't great though!
-
Security and Service
Security
Lots of glass that can be broken - very easy access for thieves, Aftermarket alarm essential if you value your CD player or CB!
Service
Parts can be awkward to get hold of and their aren't many Daihatsu dealers/service centres around.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Solid except for valve stem seals going.
Other
This car weighs nearly 2 tonnes so it likes to eat brake discs!
