Maserati was first out the blocks among its Motor Valley rivals to produce an electric car. It came in the form of 2023’s Maserati GranTurismo Folgore, which will be followed shortly by the Grecale SUV, drawing a line between where the company came from – sporty grand tourers – and where it’s headed.
The timing of this is quite neat as 2023 is also the year that Maserati returns to racing after more than a decade of absence, and it’s no coincidence that it has chosen the battery-powered Formula E series in which to compete.
Electric versions of the whole range will become available soon and by 2025 even the MC20 supercar will feature battery power.
But Maserati won’t be replacing its famous Trident logo with a three-pin plug just yet – petrol-powered versions of all its cars will be sold alongside the EVs until 2030, when only electric will be available.

Maserati GranTurismo Folgore
An electric four-seater coupe not unlike the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT, except unlike those cars, the Maserati has two doors and petrol-powered proportions. It looks absolutely brilliant from all angles. This 761hp supercar with a boot promises 280 miles of range and 800v tech for a rapid recharge. It’s also great fun to drive and ballistically fast – 0-62mph falls in just 2.7 seconds.
On paper it shouldn’t really work – how can you go on a grand tour when you need to charge every 200 or so miles? – but somehow in the real world it comes together with unexpected success. It’s hard to call the GranTurismo an everyday supercar because there’s nothing everyday about it, but its combination of speed and usability sets an exciting benchmark for future Maserati EVs.
Maserati electric cars worth waiting for
Maserati Grecale Folgore
The first ‘real-world’ EV from Maserati (the GranTurismo Fulgore is too expensive for most of us) will be the Grecale Folgore, based on the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and taking the fight to the Porsche Macan.
Maserati MC20 Folgore
The all-electric MC20 will quite possibly be one of the best-looking cars on the market once it goes on sale in 2025. It will be launched as a convertible first, called the Cielo, before the coupe version comes out a bit later and is set to get more than 1,200hp.
