Vauxhall electric cars - everything you need to know

  • Two fully electric models available
  • First electric vehicle was launched in 2010
  • Aim to be fully electric by 2028

Written by Parkers Updated: 13 June 2023

The first electric Vauxhall was the short lived Ampera, a range-extending hybrid which was introduced in 2010 and discontinued in 2014. The company then went nearly a decade without releasing an electric car, but now Vauxhall is really amping up its electric lineup.

It has an all-electric Corsa, Mokka and Astra in its line-up. It also offers plug-in hybrid models of the Grandland SUV, Astra hatchback and Astra Tourer which can roughly do 20-30 miles on electric power alone.

Vauxhall Astra Electric

Don’t adjust your screen. This really is a Vauxhall Astra.

A rival for the Volkswagen ID.3 and Renault Meganne E-Tech, the Electric Astra is aimed at people looking to make the electric switch with a name they know and trust.

In essence it’s an Astra that’s been electrified, so it shares the same basic architecture and easy-to-use interior. It uses a 54kWh battery and 156hp electric motor, giving it a 0-62mph of just a smidge over nine seconds. The WLTP range is 258 miles.

When plugged into an 11kW public charger a 0-100% refill takes 5hrs and 45mins, increasing to around 8hrs when using a 7kW home wall box. Plug into a 100kW DC CCS charger and a 20-80% charge takes around 26 minutes.

Vauxhall Corsa Electric

To get close to the WLTP MPG you’ll need to switch to the Eco driving mode.

The regular Corsa is regularly top of the bestselling cars list, so the Vauxhall Corsa Electric is important. It rivals the likes of the Renault Zoe, Honda e and MINI Electric. The Corsa Electric looks similar to its combustion engine siblings, there are only subtle differences between them.

As standard the car comes with Apple CarPlay, LED headlights, and parking sensors with higher trims benefitting from a larger screen and adaptive cruise control. The electric performance trim GSE was added to the range in early 2023, which features sport suspension and racier styling.

Vauxhall claims the Corsa Electric can do close to 300 miles on a charge but this can vary depending on many different factors such as driving style, vehicle load, and even temperature. It takes less than eight hours to charge at home, or it can take 30 minutes to get to 80% if using a 100kW fast charger.

Vauxhall Mokka Electric

Like with all EVs, the range manufacturers advertise should be taken with a pinch of salt.

The original Mokka was first released in 2012, and 10 years later Vauxhall revealed an electric version. It comes with a sleek display featuring two screens – one for its infotainment system and another for your instrument panel. It also comes with a regenerative braking system which can recover energy through braking and put it back into the battery. It rivals the Volkswagen ID.4, Mazda MX-30 and Hyundai Kona.

The sharper styling does give the Mokka-e a distinctive look that is quite different from competitors. Like the Corsa, the Vauxhall Mokka Electric can also do just over 200 miles on a single charge, but has a little less range than the Corsa Electric.

Vauxhall electric vans

Electric vans are a small fraction of the van market right now, but the market share is growing.

Alongside its fully electric car range, Vauxhall has released a plethora of vans that are EVs such as the Movano Electric, Vivaro Electric and Combo Electric. With a mix of passenger and loading vans, there is something to fit most people’s needs.

The future for Vauxhall

Vauxhall aims to have its entire range electric by 2028. This is years before the UK government’s deadline on the ban of new petrol and diesel-powered cars being sold.

The brand is also investing £100 million in a manufacturing plant in the UK producing its vans with the aim of it being carbon neutral.
