Fiat Bravo 1.8 HLX 3d (1998/S) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Good second-hand buy, but depreciation still heavy due to weak brand.
Costs
Routine services are every 12,000 miles and have seemed reasonably priced so far. Apart from tyres and a new exhaust section, no other significant costs in 70,000 miles. Cheaper to run than my Peugeot 205 GTi.

Driving
Good handling, gearbox and brakes, but 1.8 twin-cam engine not as exciting as it sounds.
Performance
16 valve engine needs to be worked hard to get exciting performance. Although not as sporty as my previous hot hatches, it is better for motorway driving.

Living with it
Reliability
I have had no significant problems in 70,000 miles apart from erratic rear wiper and idle speed. The tape player has also recently failed which I have replaced with a CD unit (not worth fixing tape).
Image
Sharp styling inside and out, although starting to look a little dated.
Comfort
This car is surprisingly roomy and the seats are comfortable, even after 4 or 5 hours (unlike new Stilo). Low speed ride is however unforgiving.

Security and Service
Security
Factory fitted alarm and immobiliser with transponder chip in key. No problems.
Service
Serviced at Caledonia Fiat, Warrington, who have been generally reasonable. Biggest problem has been botched fitting of tow bar they subcontracted to a local cowboy (4 visits to get sorted). Didn't seem to understand that they were still responsible.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Erratic idle speed.
Other
Rear wiper doesn't work properly in cold weather. Electric windows also sluggish when cold (how Italian). Heavy rain has started to cause a few small leaks (passenger footwell and rear wheel arch).
