  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Bought cheap second hand, and 18 months on has lost about 500 squid, although I have added alloys to it, and it came with an electrics pack which helped it hold value.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Group 3 insurance, the computer claims I am doing 40.2 mpg when loafing, and 39mpg when driving quicker, but I think these figures are both about 7mpg optimistic, engine drinks when it goes above 3,500rpm. EcoTek valve works well with this engine.

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Original tyres were rubbish, too much roll in the tyre wall. 15", 195, 45 rims fitted and cornering has vastly improved with much better turn in and overall grip. Mid-corner understeer. Stiff(ish) suspension, so not too much body roll (strut brace helps).

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Engine is impressive for an 8v, loves to be treated harsh, 3500-4500 rpm where torque is. Engine sounds dump and is still a hairdryer in the grand scheme, but power to weight ratio is good. Upgraded air filter a must if you want to hear it and works well.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

No problems, although aware others have had problems. The car still seems like the day I bought it 14k miles on. No dodgy electronics, although my air blower fan failed after it squeaked and I put too much WD-40 into it!!

    Image

    4 out of 5 4.0

Better than a Nova, Corsa, Fiesta but not much else.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Seats are ok, not firm or saggy, but upholstery is a really bad blue (in mine at least). I am 6' 2"", headroom good but passengers behind me have no leg room, rear comfort ok I guess.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    1 out of 5 1.0

Screwdriver and a hammer knock the lock through the door. Immobiliser a good idea, but standard stereo (tape deck!!!!) can not be removed when parked up.

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Free MOT and 12months parts warranty, didn't use either however.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

    Other

Fan failed, had to change a few bits as it was a bit skimpy (e.g. dash has no rev counter but can swap straight with any other mk2) Stereo was poor, no rear speakers.
