Fiat Uno

Good value for money. Has cost about £400 so far, but a good solid motor and a reliable cheapy car.

    Costs

Easy on petrol, insurance is low. New brake master cylinder cost over £100, this being the only criticism. Other parts are geneally cheap. Plenty around in scrapyards for cheap bits.

Not a quality drive in the typical sense, but fun and easy. Enjoyable compared to powered-everything modern cars.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

This is a light car so even with a humble 999cc engine it goes well. Needs good use of gears on hills, particularly with a full load, but still manages 85mph on the motorway.

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

A few points, particularly brakes and gearbox selector (minor problem on cap preventing reverse being engaged). Few bits and bobs wearing with age, but nothing you wouldn't expect from a cheap car. Engine very solid and always gets you there.

Not an issue for someone buying an Uno! Not a pretty car, but there are worse. Very boxy but unoffensive and tidy. Looks ok as long as it's clean and straight.

    Comfort

    2 out of 5 2.0

Ride is rough, with suspension being quite harsh. Also rather noisy. Front seats however are very comfy, with plenty of legroom. Not too much space in the back.

  • Security and Service

    Security

Nothing much standing in the way of the thief. Best advice is to purchase a cheap but effective device for this car, such as the Stoplock Pro. Reduces insurance too.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

Only experience with Fiat people was an attempt to buy a replacement door window rubber. Not particularly helpful, didn't seem to want to help with such an old car. Used rubber sealant instead in the end!

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Bit of an oil leak, occasionally a bit spluttery for a few moments until it warms up. Very reliable and nippy once it gets going.

    Other

Exhaust needs welding, window rubber perished, window winders a bit worn.
