Ford Capri boot space, practicality and safety
- Generous interior space
- Plentiful storage space throughout
- Large boot with plenty of clever features
How much space is there?
While we rate the Ford Explorer, it’s not the most spacious of electric SUVs, especially when it comes to boot space. That’s where the Capri comes in, as at 4.63m, it’s around 20cm longer than the Explorer, and that space has been put to good use.
There’s plenty of room upfront, with a wide-reaching dashboard helping to make it feel more spacious. But it’s behind this when you’re treated to more, with adults able to sit easily in the rear seats with lots of legroom especially.
A flat rear floor courtesy of its EV platform also means there’s no transmission tunnel to contend with, and therefore you could get three in the rear without too much trouble. Just watch out for the slightly sloping roofline – a 6:5” tall adult can sit in the back behind a taller driver but will have to crouch slightly. The rear door openings are also quite small; on more than one occasion passengers managed to bash their head against the top of the doors when getting out.
Boot space and storage
Boot space and storage are possibly the Capri’s two greatest strengths. At 572 litres, the boot is the largest of any ‘coupe’-styled electric SUV on this Volkswagen platform, and despite the sloping roofline, there’s plenty of space to play with. It’s around 100 litres larger than a Ford Explorer’s too. We did several tip runs in the Capri with a significant number of items in the boot on each occasion with no trouble.
The rear seats also fold 60:40 and go almost completely flat with no lip to contend with, as there can be on some smaller cars built on this VW platform, such as the Cupra Born. The boot floor can also be put on two levels, and you can also use part of the boot floor as an upright separator. There’s also a handy storage bin that could be ideal for storing odds and ends out of the way, or for dog leads, for example. One downside is an exceptionally flimsy load cover that feels like it could snap off at any given moment. It’s a typical Ford thing as the one on the Puma crossover feels equally cheap.
There’s a huge amount of storage, too, especially in the front. The centre console is massive, with several removable elements, depending on how much space you need to store items. Most of it can be hidden from sight, too, which we approve of – much of the storage in the centre console of a Hyundai Ioniq 5, for example, is completely on show. The sliding touchscreen also houses a small cubby, ideal for keeping wallets and keys out of sight.
Is it easy to park?
Despite its quite sizable dimensions, the Capri is a surprisingly easy car to park. All models also come with a reversing camera and front and rear parking sensors. A 360-degree parking camera system is only fitted as part of an optional £1,300 Driver Assistance Pack, however.
It’s also an easy car to place on a road, even quite a narrow one. The only thing that lets it down is rear visibility, especially around the rear three-quarter area because of the chunky pillar and lack of glass – a trait of all coupe-styled SUVs.
Safety
- Capri shares five-star safety rating with the Explorer
- Plenty of standard safety kit included
- Optional Driver Assistance Pack could be worth the extra spend
The Ford Capri shares the same five-star Euro NCAP rating with the Explorer, with the safety organisation saying that ‘most of the test results are those of the Explorer’ but that it has conducted an additional test to verify the Capri’s performance. Its best area was adult occupant protection (89%) followed by child occupant protection (86%). The Fords were both marked down for their safety assists (72%) with disappointing marks for its driver status warning, which monitors the attention and alertness of a driver.
Standard safety kit on the Capri includes adaptive cruise control, which can stop and start the car in traffic, as well as lane assist and traffic sign recognition. You will need the optional Driver Assistance Pack to get the full suite of features, however. This brings the driver alert system, a head-up display, park assist and a 360-degree camera.
