Ford Escort Hatchback 1.6 Flight 5d (1999/V) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Bought it at 17k miles for 5k, thought it was depreciation-proof. Now it's got 54k and worth buttons.
Costs
Fuel efficiency is ok, doesn't eat tyres either though you have to watch for power-steering-related bald patched on the outside.

On the road
Driving
Reasonable performance, it's not a hot hatch but that's not the job you buy it for anyway. Can sometimes understeer at speed.
Performance
See above - not outstanding, but it's not supposed to be.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Changed the cat at around 40k, no problems apart from that. None of the Escort's famous electrical problems (yet).
Image
Outdated, out of fashion. People don't so much laugh at it, just don't notice it.
Comfort
Driver's seat could use lumbar support on long journeys. Can be difficult for very tall drivers.

Security and Service
Security
No alarm as standard. Nobody's nicked it yet, I don't know if anyone's tried or not. They'd probably prefer the Focus next door anyway...
Service
Have only ever used Ford main dealers in an emergency, have always found them overpriced and unhelpful.
