Ford Escort Saloon 1991
  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good value for money and generous equipment levels.

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Insurance not bad, but fuel consumption disappointing for a car of this size. Previous car was larger and with a bigger engine size and was much more economical.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

Engine quite refined, but ride is very firm and takes some getting used to. Suffers a lot with tyre noise above 40 mph.

    Performance

    3 out of 5 3.0

Adequate but previous CVH units livelier than the 16V engines.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

No problems what-so-ever mechanically and only glitch was a failed ignition barrel which involved car being towed to the dealers, as no key would turn in the barrel.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

No Escort will ever set your pulse rating although sporty GTi and Mexico models much more pleasing on the eye.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

As with most Fords, seats supportive and interior of car is smart and functional. Adjustable steering wheel would have been nice though as drivers over 6ft might struggle to find a comfortable position.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

It was there every morning when I left the house!

    Service

    3 out of 5 3.0

Took 3 separate visits to sort out a flashing airbag warning light, but staff were courteous enough.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Engine

Reliable enough, although sometimes it would cut out on very cold mornings.

    Other

Just the airbag warning light and ignition lock barrel mentioned above.
