Ford Escort Saloon 1.8TD LX 4d (1995/M) Owner Review

Economy
Value
Not Bad. Got mine for £500 with a 12month ticket. There are better cars around though.
Costs
Old fashioned diesel engines, around 40-45mpg. Parts not too bad - but I'm running mine into the ground - drive it till it breaks.

On the road
Driving
Handles really well for a big car (and there is plenty of boot space).
Performance
See above - not good by nowadays standards. Useless without the turbo which doesn't come in until 3000 revs and it redlines at 4000. Hmm…

Living with it
Reliability
Something about Fords - they keep going no matter how knackered.
Image
Looks terrible with wheel discs - alloys make it quite nice looking.
Comfort
Great for motorways - very comfortable car. (You need a new stereo though, the standard is pants)

Security and Service
Security
Old Ford = Not secure as standard. Then again the TD badge makes it less attractive.
Service
Can't say - a lot of things gone wrong though see below.

Engine
Diesel engines go forever, even when hammered.

CV joints gone, ball joints gone, engine mounts loose, electrical problems. Fuel injector started leaking. Blocked breather pipes. Brake warning light keeps coming on (is it safe?)
