Ford Explorer 4.0 5d Auto (1998/S) Owner Review
-
Economy
Value
A great buy second-hand.
Costs
Servicing costs are not too steep, but spares take a while to arrive and are pricey. Tyres are under £100 and appear to have a long life (one pair 50K plus).
-
On the road
Driving
Easy to drive, relaxed motorway cruiser. Jiggles a bit on less than perfect surfaces.
Performance
Lots of torque and power allows very rapid acceleration and quiet cruising.
-
Living with it
Reliability
Had problems with the remote door locking.
Image
There are not many about. Interior is considerably less 'American' than Jeeps.
Comfort
A mobile armchair. Loads of room front & rear. Just a bit jiggly.

Security and Service
Security
Immobilisor automatically sets if key not in ignition - good security but can be annoying.
Service
Had free tyres following Firestone recall :o). Ford UK dealer service teams are not fully 'au fait' with this model.

Problems and Ownership

Missfire - but traced to dirty fuel.
