Ford Explorer 4.0 North Face 5d Auto (2000/W) Owner Review

Economy
Value
As a result of not being that popular, a used bargain. A good chunk of car for not a lot of money and all have lots of kit on them
Costs
Drinks fuel, but 4X4's do that. Servicing not much more than a Mondeo at main dealers, though their knowledge of the vehicle is distinctly lacking.

On the road
Driving
Despite being unloved in the UK, hard to beat as an honest, competent 4X4 - load area is vast with seats down and will swallow most things you chuck at it (including a queen size double bed!). Ride is not perfect, but the design is 15 years old now.
Performance
Very willing V6 with a smooth 5 speed auto - great off the lights and for munching motorway miles at legal speeds. Engine can be thrashy under harsh acceleration. Corners like any 4X4, but doesn't feel unsafe unless really challenged.

Living with it
Reliability
Not yet let me down - but wear and tear items will naturally crop up.
Image
Large, imposing and American looking vehicle - turns the odd head as they're fairly rare, but you don't. A Ford for badge prestige.
Comfort
Front seats very 'arm chair' comfortable - rear less so, but passable. The stereo system is pretty good and comes with heated/ electric seats and air con. Will invariably squeak and rattle somewhere.

Security and Service
Security
Thieves probably not that interested to be fair, but as yet untested.
Service
Enthusiastic, but knowledge of the vehicle is very weak. I'm still looking for a good independent.
