Ford Explorer verdict
Should you buy one?
That’s a tricky question, but we feel like we can justify why we’d have one over a Volkswagen ID.4. For our money, the Ford Explorer looks better – and it certainly drives better than almost all of its rivals, VW included. And yes, you lose out on a bit of boot space, but the Explorer’s far from being impractical.
Why pick an Explorer over a Mustang Mach-E? Well, it’s a little taller (which means it’s easier to load kids and shopping into), it’s not quite as long (which means it’s easier to park) and it’s properly SUV shaped, rather than being a contrived pony car/crossover mash-up.
However, the Ford Explorer isn’t just competing against the ID.4. The market isn’t just filled with competitive rivals, you can spend less and get a better car. A Skoda Enyaq is a more practical option with the same punchy motor, and it costs less. Even better, you can get a top-spec Renault Scenic for the price of an Explorer 77kWh RWD, or spend thousands less on a cheaper trim.
What we like
More than anything, we like how the Explorer gets around corners. It really is one of the better driving electric SUVs if you’re an enthusiast. Interior space is good and it feels more upmarket inside than Fords of late. It’s also quick and pretty efficient.
What we don’t like
The boot is a bit small for class standards, and the Explorer isn’t particularly cheap.
