The Fiesta Mk 4 is one of the best-protected small cars around, with strong locks, a visible VIN plate and a first-class immobiliser. It also received three stars for the Euro NCAP crash test, and comes with a driver’s airbag, optional anti-lock brakes and effective seat belts. The Ghia models also come with an alarm as standard, for added security.

The Fiesta is ideally suited to inner city driving and easily manoeuvrable through congested traffic. Its small, compact design does mean that it can be a little awkward to access the back seats – especially on the three-door models – but there should be enough room in the rear for children. The Fiesta’s restricted luggage capacity will prevent you from getting too much shopping or luggage in the boot, although extra space can be bestowed by removing the carpeted parcel shelf and folding rear seats.
