Ford Focus Hatchback 1.6 Ghia 5d Auto (01) (2002/52) Owner Review

Economy
Value
We bought privately and paid only £8k for it in 08/2004. Car had 'new car smell'!
Costs
Servicing seems quite reasonable at dealerships and fuel consumption isn't bad.

On the road
Driving
Lovely engaging drive. Car feels taught and responsive, although this can be due to the fact that, although this is an '02' 52 plate, it has only done 6k miles!
Performance
Good performance, which can be held back a bit if the A/C is running. Would have liked to try a 2.0 litre engine in same body, but the 1.6 acquits itself well, since it strikes the best balance between performance and economy.

Living with it
Reliability
Seems rock-solid. The engine isn't even broken in yet and since Focus has good reputation anyway, we have no reason to doubt that this will be too.
Image
Bought for my wife. Lady's car with good looks and lines. Car feels bigger than it is and a more than competent motorway cruiser - unlike our MKIV Golf (see my other reviews).
Comfort
Good, luxurious seats, as you would expect in a Ghia. Nicely finished off with dark grey 'steel' looking inserts in lieu of the wood. Quality of cabin and plastics NOT as nice as the Golf MKIV.

Security and Service
Security
Car doesn't appear to have an alarm - just remote central locking and immobilizer. Ford should have done much better.
Service
Ford main dealers can be flaky - depends who you speak to and when. Very hit and miss :P
