Ford Focus RS (2009-2010) boot space, practicality and safety
The RS has a five-star Euro NCAP crash test safety rating like the standard Focus hatchback. It also benefits from the same safety kit, so there are dual front, side and curtain airbags, ABS and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Because of the unique Recaro sport seats, Isofix child-seat anchor points must be ordered when the car is new – check to see if they’re fitted if you’re buying used.
Open the hatch at the back and you could be looking into the boot of any Focus. And that’s a good thing as, with 385 litres on offer, it compares well to other hatches like the Astra and Golf. The seats split 60/40 and fold, so in respect to boot space, it’s a more than capable small family car. It’s a similar story in the cabin, where there’s a decent-sized glovebox that’s air conditioned to keep drinks cool.
In fact the only time you’ll notice that the RS is less practical than any other Focus is getting into the back. As it’s available in three-door only and is fitted with large sports seats, it can be a bit of a squeeze – and once you’re in, leg room is also limited. Plus whereas the standard car will seat five, the RS has only space for four. As with all Focus models since early 2008, it’s fitted with a device on the fuel filler called ‘Easyfuel’ that prevents the car being filled with diesel.
