Overview
The Ford Grand C-Max was the one that got away. In 2003 Ford launched the five-seat C-Max but chose not to offer it as a seven-seat version. Ford admitted it was a mistake and made up for that by releasing the seven-seat Grand C-Max. The company believes it will be the most popular car in the C-Max range and it’s expected to make up 60 per cent of sales.
The Grand version is 140mm longer than the C-Max, giving it a total length of 4.52 metres. It’s also 58mm taller, with the aim of improving interior space. The Grand C-Max gets the new Ford family nose with a revised grille, while the interior has been upgraded using higher quality materials. Two trim levels are on offer, Zetec and Titanium, but even the entry level Zetec comes with plenty of equipment.
It includes air-con, alloy wheels, a DAB radio, a CD player, Bluetooth and USB connectivity, voice control and rear parking sensors. Buyers can pick from a range of petrol and diesel engines, including punchy EcoBoost turbocharged petrols and flexible 2.0-litre diesels. Those interested in cutting running costs will probably want to go for the 1.6-litre TDCi version, which is claimed to average 57mpg.
The EcoBoost petrols are quite good on fuel as well, with a claimed average in the range of 40mpg, so if your annual mileage is low don’t disregard them. Out on the road the car performs well and the interior is comfortable, quiet and spacious. As you’d hope it’s also immensely practical, with a variety of storage spaces, seating layouts and a decent boot.
