  • Economy

    Value

    3 out of 5 3.0

Buying used you get a lot of car for your money. This however does of course works both ways, depreciation is steep.

    Costs

    4 out of 5 4.0

Parts and servicing are cheap. Fuel economy isn't great, but is quite reasonable if you're not too heavy with the right foot.

  • On the road

    Driving

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very good driving position and visibility, steering feels precise. A very nice driving experience, probably the last thing you'd expect from a "practical family car".

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

Good performance from the 2.0i Zetec - quick off the lights and pretty good overtaking ability. Only bad point is the breaks- fine below 60mph but lack stopping power if you need to break hard from 70. Disc breaks on the back would have been good.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    4 out of 5 4.0

A few minor issues, but generally very good. Always starts first time and responds very well, even when not driven for a week or two. Only negative points is that the interior has quite a few rattles, but then that is after 120k miles.

    Image

    2 out of 5 2.0

You don't buy a mondeo for its image - the word mundane springs to mind.

    Comfort

    4 out of 5 4.0

Nice interiors, seats are comfortable (though not as good as the superb seats found in the Si models) and very adjustable. Steering wheel is rake and reach adjustable so easy to find a good driving position.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    3 out of 5 3.0

Alarm, immobiliser and deadlocks as standard. Can't really comment on how well these work - no-one's every broken into mine.

    Service

    5 out of 5 5.0

Can't reccomend TC Harrison Ford (Pride Park Derby) highly enough. Work always carried out to a high standard for a very reasonable cost.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Problems

    Engine

Minor oil leak, turned out to be faulty pressure switch (around £80 to fix). Knocking noise when accelerating sharply turned out to be loose engine mounting! Put it down to poor servicing by the previous owner.

    Other

Airbag warning light started flashing, turned out to be a loose connection to a seatbelt pre-tensioner.
