Ford Mondeo Hatch 1993

  • Economy

    Value

    4 out of 5 4.0

Great value for money, only because it depreciated like a brick. Dropped off a motorway overpass before I bought it, meaning I bought it for 50% of its original price after only a year!

    Costs

    3 out of 5 3.0

Can be thirsty if booted and the insurance can be a bit steep if you don't shop round. Parts tend to be cheap, though.

  • On the road

    Driving

    4 out of 5 4.0

The car is a joy to drive. Comfortable, quick when required, sedate when not. The car feels solid to sit in and to drive.

    Performance

    4 out of 5 4.0

When pushed, the performance of the car is great. Plenty of power, corners well, with very little body roll.

  • Living with it

    Reliability

    5 out of 5 5.0

Apart from a faulty plug lead when I bought it at 13k miles (very common problem) and a failed CV joint at 70k miles, it's never missed a beat in 100k miles.

    3 out of 5 3.0

It's a Mondeo! People don't turn their heads and coo. On the other hand, it doesn't make them feel ill. It's very middle of the road and non-threatening.

    Comfort

    5 out of 5 5.0

Very comfortable. It's possible to drive for 4 hours or more, without a break, and I still feel as fresh as when I left.

  • Security and Service

    Security

    5 out of 5 5.0

Never had a problem with security, but deadlocks & RFID keyfob are enough for me.

    Service

    2 out of 5 2.0

The service I had from the Ford garage I had the plug lead fixed at was quite poor. They took 2 or 3 days to.

  • Problems and Ownership

    Faulty plug lead (common fault).
