Prices are competitive, and you can normally get some kind of deal on a new model, but the sheer volume on the market means depreciation is heavy. You’re better off buying at a year or two old. Fuel consumption is average for the class – if you’re a medium to high-mileage driver it would be worthwhile choosing a TDCi model. Ford servicing prices are reasonable.

Mondeo is relatively green and easy on the environment. With an average of 181 g/km CO2 across the range, its emissions are quite low for a medium-sized saloon. However, it’s worth noting that the line up has a high number of diesel models, bringing the average down and giving buyers more choices of low-emission versions. Diesels typically produce less CO2 than petrol engines with similar power outputs.

The range is also fairly economical, averaging 41 mpg.

The Ford Mondeo has been pretty reliable, save for a few recalls to correct build faults, and some customers did find problems with the handbrake in 2001 (not holding the car stationary after parking), which was not the subject of a recall but would have been rectified at the following service. A few others have also reported problems with the rear suspension on older cars, which could be expensive to replace.
