Ford Mustang Mach-E verdict
Should you buy one?
If you’re in the market for a fast and cool-looking electric SUV, we can recommend a Ford Mustang Mach-E. Would we take one over a similarly-priced Kia EV6 or Hyundai Ioniq 5? Probably not, although it’s not far off in overall terms.
Ford’s fully-electric, performance-orientated family SUV is fun to drive and commendably efficient, as well as cool to look at and to be seen in. The disappointingly lumpy low-speed ride and weird-feeling steering mark it down, but there’s a little more flair here than other electric cars in this market. The total lack of Ford badges adds an element of mystery to the car that is arguably more successful than the use of the Mustang badge.
This will ramp-up the appeal even more for drivers looking for something a bit different, and that’s been carried over inside the car. Some things are familiar and the large portrait screen looks beamed in directly from a Tesla, but elsewhere it’s a mix of traditional Mustang styling and contemporary, upmarket materials we’re not that used to seeing in a Ford.
Practicality is a strong point too, not just the sheer amount of cabin and boot space, but the range this car can deliver on a full charge. Anxiety over being able to travel long distances in a single hop is still a roadblock for potential electric car customers, and the ability to cover more than 300 miles without needing to find a plug will be very reassuring indeed.
What we like
The fact that this doesn’t look or feel like a petrol or diesel SUV that has been converted to battery power. From the exterior styling and badging down to the layout of the interior, the Mach-E is an electric car designed to turn heads. The powerful electric motor(s) can surprise and delight with an unexpected turn of pace too.
What we don’t like
Even the monstrously powerful GT spec car isn’t all that fun to drive. Low-speed ride can be jarring, and overall comfort is just not that impressive.
