Ford Sierra Estate (1982 - 1993) 1.8 GLX 5d Owner Review
In their own words
As a daily driver and retro classic, the Sierra is pretty good... So far I have have had minor problems with the Pierburg Carburettor, which I replaced with a NOS unit for just £100 (Home job) and have removed a 'DIY' manual choke conversion kit that had been retro-fitted by a former owner. the drivers door lock has failed (needs a cheap minor repair) but I've faced no other Problems.
Rot... It's had some, and will have more no doubt, but a well looked after and/or proeprly repaired car is never an issue. Rot spots are found in the arches, inner wings, mis way along the door sills and around the front seat mouting points.
External platics are prone to deterioration due to UV, and you may find dulling, blistering or splitting of the bumpers, window trims and indicatore lens edges.
It has some dinks and wrinkles, the trims a bit tired here and there but at 33 yrs old it's all you can expect.
Handling with 4 upper-mid range Michellin tyres is good, and it corners and behaves well even in the wet. Acceleration is fair for it's age, and economy is as anticipated for an older 1.8 liter estate car... Not the best, but not bancrupting me either. It stops 'quite' well, but no ABS = careful driving and leaving a comfortably large reactive gap in faster traffic. IF you wnt more... Buy a higher spec' Sierra, there are plenty to choose from.
Load space is good, and no lip provides easy loading and unloading at the back, spares are still readily available, many new and plenty second hand parts from auto factors and on line.
All in all, a good choice for a rolling resto/retro classic and daily driver classic. Would I sell ? Yes, but it's holding it's value well and I anticipate an easy sale when I come to buy my next classic.
