FSO 1300, 1500 &125P Saloon 4d (1981/W) Owner Review

Economy
Value
You can't get too fussy for £50.
Costs
Thirsty for a 1.3, otherwise very cheap to run if you like getting your hands dirty.

On the road
Driving
Bit of a tank, driving it fast requires skill, nothing like the original Italian Fiat 125: heavy steering and wayward rear end. You can't help but like for some reason.
Performance
1300 engine is a bit underpowered for the weight of the car. 0-60 & top speed nothing brilliant but by no means hopeless. Modifications would be very easy I suppose.

Living with it
Reliability
Needs regular servicing but that's simple. Engines are rough, ready, rugged and unbreakable. Rust is a different story. Ruthlessly patched up and sprayed. No silly modern gimmicks to give trouble.
Image
60's styling always wins some favourable comments (though some think it's a genuine 125). Some think I'm a cheapskate but the Polish ladies love it. They never knew these cars were sold here and in RHD form.
Comfort
You'll never be short of space in here. Leatherette seats are very comfy. Big soft sofa in the back is great for a student's lifestyle. Very powerful heater for Polish winters, though the leaf-sprung ride is VERY jolting.

Security and Service
Security
Why a thief would want one of these is beyond me.
Service
There are no FSO dealers. The make no longer exists. I service it myself. My mate Alex (from Poland) says he can get me just about anything for this car.

Problems and Ownership
Problems
Engine
Oil and oil filter change every 3000 miles (6000 recommended). Harsh, noisy, rough, but willing and near-bombproof once cared for.
Other
Crude but very effective and reliable and roomy transport. It's been a good friend to me and costs very little to run. I'll keep it forever if possible.
