Should you buy one?

To be perfectly blunt, the Genesis G80 wouldn’t be our first choice. Not because this isn’t a good car – it actually has a lot of really good things going for it: distinct exterior design, knockout interior, lots of well-integrated technology and an interesting, customer-focused sales and aftercare approach.

The problem here is what’s under the bonnet. Buyers are unlikely to come flocking to a petrol engine that’s off the pace on economy and emissions, and while the diesel was available it felt old and out of place in this kind of car. Similarly, we’re slightly underwhelmed by the ride comfort, which isn’t quite cossetting as we’d like from a car that otherwise offers such extensive luxury. A BMW 5 Series remains a better choice.

However, if you’re really keen on the high quality interior of the G80 and find its customer service offering appealing, we’d direct your attention to the Electrified G80. You’ll need to be able to cope with the restrictions of running an all electric car, but with fast charging and an official range of over 300 miles this might not be as bad as you fear. Plus it’s fast and refined as well.

Genesis has plenty of other appealing models to choose from as well, so don’t dismiss the brand on this basis.

What we like

Really, really impressive interior, lots of technology – which all seems to work well – and a very customer-focused sales and aftercare package, including five years of warranty and servicing as part of the asking price.

What we don’t like

The engines just aren’t competitive for this class of car. The ride is a little too firm. And the brand doesn’t (yet) have the prestige of long-established rivals.
